Here's the last SIP roof panel going up!!!

To hold up the SIP roof panels, beams are placed at the peak, and for long roof panels, in the middle of the panel. We decided to use 3X3 in. steel poles (brown poles) to support the beams. The steel poles are bolted to the concrete, then the beams are bolted to the steel poles and 10 or 12 in. screws are used to hold the roof panels to the beams. This gives us better hold-down for the roof during a hurricane. This view is looking at the Living Room wall and the Powder Room door.

Turning around, you can see the beams over the Living Room, Dining Room and Kitchen - lots of beams and steel poles! The doorway is between the Foyer and the Living Room.

This is the beam over the Master Bedroom before the SIP roof panels were put up.

This house is an inspiration. It's been a couple months - how's it working out for you?

I'm in the process of planning a custom home and have been trying to find a system that is suited for Houston's hot, wet and hurricane-prone climate. I read in a comment you wrote in another blog that you had a real "guru" putting up your SiPs. Who did you get? And how was the price compared to a typical stick frame? Did you design this entire house yourself or did you hire an architect to help? I'm full of questions! :) If you don't mind, I'd love to get your email address so I can fire off even a couple more questions in a more private forum. But no worries if you're not comfortable giving an address out.
